Funding Source: VA Office of Rural Health Title: Geriatric Scholars Program Description: The Geriatric Scholars Program is an intensive national educational initiate to train primary care providers who work in VA rural community based outpatient clinics (CBOC) in the care of older Veterans. The Program includes mandatory intensive didactic courses and encourages self-directed in-service learning opportunities, such as clinical practica at a GRECC. Each Scholar is expected to apply new knowledge though quality improvement projects that directly benefit older Veterans. The project started as a small pilot IDEA award in FY08 and expanded the number of employees educated and the scope of the project through an IDEA award in FY09/10. We anticipate that the program will be on-going and continuous over the next several years to reach additional members of the VA CBOC staff, add additional training opportunities to support the roll-out of the patient centered medical home in rural settings, and to support knowledge gains and learning beyond the one-time intervention.
