Program Elements

  • Screening by Geriatricians at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center
  • Assessment of the interaction of important diseases and conditions such as:
  • Memory and mood problems
  • Falls and gait instability
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Weight loss/gain
  • Hearing and vision problems
  • Preventative health education to promote a healthy lifestyle

Veterans Will Recieve

  • Immediate feedback of screening results by a physician Information about services/programs at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center.
  • Eligibility review and enrollment assistance in referral to specialty services
  • Health promotion education based on identified need
  • Seminars on health topics
  • Assessment report sent to you and you personal physician

Eligibilty Issues

  • Veterans 65 years and older
  • Previous active military service
  • Honorable Discharge
  • Cost is based on income, assets, insurance, and service related criteria

Areas Screened

  • Disease detection and risk factor identification for:
  • Anemia Cardiac/Stroke Osteoporosis Thyroid Disease
  • Diabetes Prostate Disease Poor Balance/Falls Poor Nutrition
  • Poor Vision and Hearing Memory and Mood Problems (Depression)

Screening Process

  • Call for appointment
  • Written instructions and directions will be sent
  • On the day of the screening
  • Come on an empty stomach
  • Plan to spend approximately 1 hour
  • Screening Stations
  • Station 0: Determine Eligibility
  • Station 1: Health Screening Questionnaire
  • Station 2: Mood and Memory Assessment
  • Station 3: Blood Pressure, Height, Weight
  • Station 4: Blood Tests for Blood Count, Kidney Function, Glucose, Blood Salts, Cholesterol
  • Station 5: Consultation with Physician
  • Station 6: Targeted Health Promotion Information; Referrals
