STAFF OFTEN OVERESTIMATE INTAKE LEVELS

Our studies show that nursing home workers consistently overestimate residents' food and fluid intake by 15% or more on MDS assessments and on the daily estimates they document in residents' charts (1, 2). Consequently, they fail to identify as many as half of the residents potentially at risk for undernutrition and weight loss (1).

There are several reasons for inaccurate estimates of intake, including an overworked staff at mealtimes, vague instructions in the MDS User's Manual on how to assess food and fluid intake, and a failure by supervisors to periodically check nurse aides' daily intake estimates for accuracy.
